The Kennedy Legacy War on Poverty: Johnson’s plan to introduce measures to train the jobless, educate the uneducated, provide healthcare Economic Opportunity Act: created Job Corps to train people between in work skills needed to acquire better jobs Volunteers in Service: sent volunteers into poverty-stricken American communities, modeled after Peace Corps

The Great Society Great Society: Johnson’s vision which demanded “an end to poverty and racial injustice” Medicare: healthcare for the aged Medicaid: healthcare for the poor Provided federal funds to improve schools in poorer communities Laws protecting the environment and the consumer passed Immigration and Nationality Act: increased immigrant quotas

Warren Court: led by Chief Justice Earl Warren, most liberal Supreme Court in American history “one man, one vote”: reapportioned districts to better represent people in government Gideon v. Wainright: all accused criminals had the right to a lawyer whether or not they could pay for one Miranda v. Arizona: an accused criminal had to be informed of his/her 5th and 6th Amendment rights before being questioned Engel v. Vitale: school prayer was a violation of the 1st Amendment, promoted religion by govt. body
