Originates in the cells of the lungs
May spread from other primary locations to the lungs

Causes of Lung Cancer: 1. 90% of lung cancer cases are attributed to cigarette smoking One in 7 people who smoke two or more packs a day will die of lung cancer Cigarettes contain over 7,000 chemical compounds, at least 70 of which are carcinogenic

Non-smokers who live/work with smokers are 24% more likely to develop lung cancer than those who do not

2. The second leading cause of lung cancer is radon gas.
Can become concentrated in homes from the ground (uranium decay in rocks and soil)

Types of Lung Cancer 1. Bronchogenic carcinoma:
More than 90% of lung cancer cases start in the bronchi 2. Alveolar cell carcinoma: Starts in the air sacs of the lungs

3. Less common tumors Bronchial adenoma Adeno refers to glands

Initial Symptoms Symptoms depend on the type and location of the cancer Cough may worsen Sputum may be streaked with blood May cause wheezing Collapsed lung Chest pain

Later Symptoms Loss of appetite Weight loss Weakness
Shortness of breath May spread to the liver, brain, adrenal glands, and bone

Diagnosis X-ray of the chest Tissue sample of the lungs

Treatment Surgery—if the cancer has not spread and is not too large
Radiation therapy —not intended to “cure” but to prolong life Chemotherapy
