History of the Seat Belt

New Jersey’s Seat Belt Law
The driver and all passengers must wear a seatbelt. Driver is responsible for enforcing the law. Child restraint systems must be placed in the rear of the vehicle. All children under 8 must be seated in the rear seat.

Child Passenger Safety Law
Under the age of 2 and less than 30 lbs Rear facing child passenger restraint system with 5 point harness in the rear seat of the vehicle Under the age of 4 and less than 40 lbs Rear facing child passenger restraint system with 5 point harness in the rear seat of the vehicle OR Forward facing child passenger restraint system with 5 point harness in the rear seat of the vehicle Under the age of 8 and less than 57 inches OR Booster Seat

Car Condition Horn- Should not be over used. Use horn to signal when passing and when coming out of a blind alley, curve or driveway Tires- Do not drive on tires less than 1/16 in. of tread Windshield- cracks or chips could cause it to break

Idling Your Vehicle NJ law requires all motorists to restrict vehicle idling to three minutes or less Unnecessary and harmful to your vehicle and your health

Carbon monoxide – odorless, colorless gas that is present in a vehicle’s exhaust Operating a vehicle with an exhaust leak or poorly tuned engine Operating a vehicle with the trunk or rear tailgate open Operating a vehicle with holes in the body of the vehicle Idling a vehicle in a garage or confined space, even if the garage door is open Operating a vehicle with a tailpipe that is blocked by debris, including snow, leaves or water

STEERING Both hands 9 & 3 o’clock position.
Firm but not too tight grip.

Turn signals must be given 100 feet before you turn
Driving Signals Turn signals must be given 100 feet before you turn Right turn – hand and arm upward Left turn – hand and arm straight out Stop or slowing down – hand and arm downward, palm facing to the rear

Facing downhill – turn wheels toward curb
Parking on a hill Facing downhill – turn wheels toward curb Facing uphill – wheels away from the curb No curb – turn wheel toward the edge of the road

Turn the wheel in the direction you want the rear of the car to go.
REVERSE Steering the wheel to the right moves the car right; steering the car to the left moves the car to the left. Turn the wheel in the direction you want the rear of the car to go.

Switch from high to low beams within 500ft
NIGHT BLINDNESS HEADLIGHT GLARE: Don’t look directly at headlights – look beyond them & to the right edge of the roadway Reduce your speed Drive within the range of your headlights – 500ft (high beam) 350ft (low beam) Switch from high to low beams within 500ft
