2. The Fall of Rome
After Rome fell, the lands were overrun with barbarians - people belonging to a group or tribe that were seen as uncivilized
The powerful groups were the ones with the strongest warriors and the ones that controlled the most land

The Franks were successful because they created a new fighting style – knights fighting in suits of armor on horseback
In 481, Clovis became king of the Franks at age 15 and defeated the last remnants of the Roman army in Western Europe
Clovis also led the Franks to Christianity and was baptized in the Roman Catholic Church

4. Charlemagne’s Empire
Charlemagne was in power for 40 years and he built his empire with the help of a pope – Leo III, the leader of the Roman Catholic Church
Leo and Charlemagne created a society where the church had an extremely important role in everyone’s daily lives
Their structure of society helped to protect against invasions by Muslims, Magyars, and Vikings and establish Feudalism in Western Europe
