Theories of Emotion
4
Emotions Emotions a response of the whole organism, involving 1- physiological arousal (heart pounding) 2- expressive behaviors (walking faster) 3- conscious experience (Are they going to mug me?) There are multiple theories about how these 3 pieces come together
5
2 Major Controversies 1: Does the physical response come before or after the emotional experience? Did I notice my heart racing start to panic or did I start the fell a sense of panic and then my heart started to race? 2: Does thinking always come before emotion? Did I think about the mugging before reacting emotionally?
6
Common Sense Theory explains the relationship between thinking and feeling. EX: we cry because we are sad EX: we tremble because we are afraid. 1st comes conscious awareness and then physiological responses
7
James-Lange Theory Physiological arousal comes first and then the emotion
8
Cannon-Bard Theory Stimulus triggers physiological arousal and emotion at the same time
9
Two-Factor Theory (Schachter & Singer)
2 pieces required to experience emotion 1)Physiological arousal 2) Mental label of that arousal
10
Today Lets look at the last page of your packet to review the 3 theories Begin HW HW= Qs #2-4 (Embodied Emotion)
