1 Demonstration of the tool
Vicki Pollit 16 October 2017

2 Background objectives
To construct a flexible and user friendly tool to enable evaluation of TEC services or interventions Facilitate evidence based evaluation of benefits realisation Assist in development of a business case

3 Developing a business case
What is it for? Know your audience Do you just want to consider use of resources or patient outcomes also? Alongside economic case include: Current service profile and strategic context Case for change (policy?) and appraisal of options Intangible benefits

4 Considerations in design
Evidence available to populate the tool Complex interventions Wide range of TECS users Needs of the business analysts The tool relies on the user to populate the analysis using local data specific to their own context.

5 Exercise: Imagine that you are using the tool to evaluate one of the following technology enabled care interventions: A. Stop smoking text service B. Telemonitoring for diabetes Identify 10 key metrics which would need to be measured in order to evaluate whether benefits have been realised. Which of these metrics could translate to resource savings in the NHS? Are these cashable savings? In what time frame would the benefits be realised?

6 Cashable savings Cash-releasing vs capacity generating
Value of capacity in terms of meeting future demand In practice costs may not reduce because of increased demand

7 Brief demo of the tool

8 Summary The benefits realisation tool:
takes the hard work out of calculating associated cost of various health care resources stores case study data, allowing for comparison of interventions against a common baseline helps structure simple assumptions regarding the potential benefit over time Is exploratory in nature, expert advice and robust analysis should be undertaken for large funding decisions

9 Thank you
