6 A Meaning-First Approach is A Balanced Approach!
Does it make sense? Does it look right? Does it sound right?

7 How does it work? Consider a child trying to read the following:
“The _______ ball” “The _______ ball rolled across the sand into the water.”

8 Let’s try it together … Read the first pages of the A-Z reader on your desk together. One of the words are covered up to encourage your reader to think first of meaning and what sounds right. Parents, guide your reader to guess the covered word … here are the 3 questions in order.

9 Guide your child’s guess about the covered word with these questions IN ORDER:

10 Got it? Make a bookmark! IES Readers: Please create a bookmark so you remember to ask yourself these three questions whenever you want to figure out a new word! IES Parents: Please read and enjoy a special bookmark for you to help you lead “book talks” with your Remarkable Readers at home!
