2 The Phoenicians = The Sea People
The land of Canaan where they lived was dry, sandy and rocky. So, it was unsuitable for growing crops or raising animals. Instead, they began sailing and trading good with other people.

3 What body of water did the Phoenicians and the other sea people
use for their trade? Mediterranean Sea Sea peoples were those who lived and sailed around the MEDITERRANEAN SEA. Other Mediterranean people traveled by boat. TRUE

The Phoenicians were the group of people living in CANAAN.

Two important Phoenician cities were TYRE AND CARTHAGE. What were two important Phoenician cities?? Tyre was located in Canaan; Carthage was founded in northern Africa.

Glass How did they make the glass? Who invented this process of glass blowing as seen here? What did the Phoenicians use to make glass? Sand and lye The Phoenicians were the first people to invent glass blowing. TRUE

7 First, the Phoenicians started with SAND and LYE.

8 Lye was a special chemical made by pouring water over ashes and collecting the liquid that came out.

9 Next, they mixed the lye with pure sand over a very hot fire

They used a special dye made from snails. This purple dye was called the “color of the kings” because the dye was so expensive. One purple cloak could cost an entire year’s salary!! What was the color of the of the Phoenician’s dye? Purple The Phoenicians used SNAILS to make their dye. It was called the “color of the kings” because it was so expensive.

The Phoenicians started COLONIES, little settlements of people, in many of the places where the ships landed.

Goliath!! He was a philistine, one of the a tribes of sea people! Goliath was in a tribe of sea people called the PHILISTINES.
