The Life of a Massive Star

2
Stage 1: Planetary Nebula
A planetary nebula is residual matter left behind when a star explodes. It compacts to form a protostar.
3
Stage 2: Protostar A protostar is compacted matter of a planetary nebula and the second stage of a massive star.
4
Stage 3: Main Sequence The main sequence is the process followed as a star goes from protostar to a “Red Giant” or “Super Giant”.
5
Stage 4: Red/Super Giant
Giant is an understatement for this huge star. It is achieved at the completion of main sequence and when it explodes: can lead to two outcomes.
6
Stage 5: Supernova The Supernova stage occurs when a star explodes. From here, it either becomes a neutron star or a black hole.
7
Stage 6a and 6b 6a b Black Hole Neutron Star
8
Stage 6a: Black Hole A black hole can be found at the center of a galaxy. It occurs after a supernova and emits enough energy to hold an entire galaxy together.
9
Stage 6b: Neutron Star A Neutron Star is a star with combined neutrons and electrons that create a tiny compact star.
