Maps, Topography, & Landforms
Semester Exam Review Maps, Topography, & Landforms
2
Latitude & Longitude Parallel Latitude Meridian Longitude
Lines running east and west around the earth Latitude The degree measurement between each parallel. Measures north & south of the equator, located at 0 𝑜 Meridian Lines running north and south around the earth Longitude The degree measurement between each meridian. Measures east & west of the prime meridian, located at 180 𝑜
3
Time Zones There are 24 time zones in the world.
Time difference between each = 1 hour
4
Map Legends A map legend contains symbols for features such as cities and rivers.
5
Topography Topography: the physical appearance of the natural features of land surfaces. Topographic maps show the changes in elevation of Earth’s surfaces.
6
Topographic Maps A contour line connects regions of the same elevation. An index contour: thicker line gives the elevation at that level A contour interval: The difference in elevation between 2 side by side contour lines.
7
Topographic Maps When contour lines are spread out, the slope of the hillside is shallow. When contour lines are close together, the slope of the hillside is steep.
8
Topographic Maps What is the contour interval on this map? 20 feet
9
Topographic Maps Northeast Which map direction is Blue River flowing?
(Rivers flow from high elevation to low elevation) Northeast
10
Topographic Maps What is the highest elevation on this map? 380 feet
11
Landforms Laccolith: An igneous intrusion with a flat floor and a rounded roof which has pushed up the sediments above it into the shape of a dome.
12
Landforms Alluvial Fan:
A cone shape pile of sediment where the gradient of a stream decreases (i.e. at the base of a steep slope or mountain front).
13
Landforms Meandering River:
The curved path of a river, especially in a flood-plain.
14
Landforms Fault: A break in the rocks along which movement has taken place.
15
Landforms Delta: Sediment laid down at the mouth of a river in the shape of the Greek letter delta (Δ) where it enters the sea or a lake.
16
Landforms Glacial Valley:
A U-shaped valley that formed as the result of a glacier moving through and scraping, gouging, and plucking the rocks through which it moved.
17
Landforms Mountain: A large landform that usually forms a peak as the result of tectonic forces or volcanism. It is usually larger and steeper than a hill.
18
Landforms Landslide: The movement of a mass of rock, soil, or both, down a slope.
