Where are we at? What resulted from the Renaissance?
Vacuum of power: Humanism caused Church to lose power that the Monarchs, Nobles and common people fight over. That is essentially what sets up the next unit. Who is going to take power? What ideas are going influence power? We will see…

What is Absolutism? Absolute monarch: (According to your awesome textbook) ruler with complete authority over government and lives of the people he or she governs. So what does that mean? Absolute ruler = the boss

What makes an absolute ruler?
Does this guy just make himself boss? How does he (or she) maintain power? There are certain characteristics absolute rulers have. Divine Right= God made him the ruler No check on power= nobody can stop him Big military to back him up= war many times to grow power

Divine Right, huh? If they believed God made them the ruler, then no one can stop them, not even the church. Fortunately for the Catholic Church, all the major European rulers who could have over taken the church were Catholic and instead wished to protect it. Lucky thing for the Catholic Church.

Where are we? Map Activity- Use page 423 to label and color your map. Include: Spain and the Spanish Hapsburg claims Austrian Hapsburgs France England Ottoman Empire Papal States Borders of the Holy Roman Empire

Homework Do guided reading 17.1 on the back of the map.
This will be all about Spain and their Absolute ruler Phillip II Pay particular attention to the whole Hapsburg Empire. It is complicated but if you read through it, you may understand it better.
