Situation 1: Many rulers in ancient India practiced Hinduism. After a ruler’s death, the oldest son would take his father’s place as ruler and marry a woman who was from another ruling family. The other sons would become warriors. Warriors were seen as the defenders of the society and deserving of influence and power. They would all spend their lives in the upper levels of society.
