Restorative Practices in a school context
Lancashire March 2010 Chris Straker Headteacher - Endeavour High School, Hull.

Endeavour High School was placed in
special measures in June 2009. The school is an inclusive and orderly environment; the impact of the school’s work on restorative practices has positively supported the development of students’ personal, social and leadership skills and provided them with good opportunities to demonstrate responsibility in lessons and the community. There are good relationships between students and between students and staff. Students say they feel safe in school and know who to talk to if they have problems. …in nearly all lessons relationships are good, reflecting the school’s commitment to ensuring that restorative principles underpin the learning ethos Ofsted 2009

We are still analysing this but as with the primary schools it seems that higher ability pupils are achieving more consistently.

Restorative Practices is the process of repairing and rebuilding relationships between people, this process helps bring everyone together to build a stronger community. It is all about respect for each other and being able to voice your opinions without fear of being judged. It helps build confidence and self esteem. Most importantly, it is about promoting teamwork and helping you become comfortable with the people around you…so that a happy working environment can be maintained and new friendships can be formed. Ned - Pupil at Hull Trinity House School (One of the pupils trained to facilitate circles in Hull Schools).
