William Shakespeare William Shakespeare was an English poet, playwright, and actor, widely regarded as the greatest writer in the English language and the world's pre-eminent dramatist. Often called England's national poet, and the "Bard of Avon". Born: April 1564, Stratford-upon-Avon, United Kingdom Died: April 23, 1616, Stratford-upon-Avon, United Kingdom Married to Anne Hathaway (he was 18, she was 26) Children: first born - Susanna (Hall) Twins: Hamnet Shakespeare (died at around age 11), Judith (Quiney) Quotes: “Be not afraid of greatness: some are born great, some achieve greatness, and some have greatness thrust upon them.”

Shakespeare’s career:
Wrote around 38 plays. Wrote tragedies, comedies, and histories. Wrote plays for The Globe Theatre Partnered with James Burbage and Richard Burbage. James Burbage owned The Theatre (name later changed to The Globe) Richard Burbage was James’ son and eminent actor, best of London. Shakespeare bought into The Globe. Shakespeare bought the Black Friars Club for evening performances. Retired in 1612, died four years later. On Shakespeare’s tombstone: Good friend for Jesus sake forbeare, To dig the dust enclosed here. Blessed be the man that spares these stones, And cursed be he that moves my bones.

Owned by James Burbage – had license to build first theatre Center of London until landowner raised rent Moved to the other side of the Thames River Reopened under new name and new management Co-owned by Richard Burbage and William Shakespeare Each got a share of box office Richard and William got another share each for acting Only William got a share for being the playwright People who saw the play for a penny were called Groundlings Some sat on the stage and smoked, talked, and ate – Stinkards!
