1 Welcome to Room 23! October 28, 2016 Language Arts Important Dates
This week we started a new theme, “How Does Heat Cause Change?” We had many discussions on this theme and read a story about how a little polar bear got separated from his home and family. We learned a new comprehension strategy, determining importance, and practiced this with the story Little Polar Bear. We read a story, Luisa’s Lab, and learned about Luisa’s experiment with water and ice. We also learned three new vocabulary words, melt, liquid, and observe. Our high frequency words (HFW) this week are: I’m, house, it’s, then, good. Please review these with your child at home. Word Study This week we continued learning about the short /i/ vowel. Ask your child to sing the “Iggy Iguana” song that we sing in class! We practiced adding and taking away letters to form new words with the short /i/ sound. We learned and practiced the –ip and -in word families and students learned about other word families in their reading groups. We added new words to our word wall. Please practice these at home. 2 Alternates for the week:
Weekly Reports Don’t forget to ask your child about his/her weekly report. Please remember that N’s are still expected this time of year. However, if they become consistent N’s week after week, then we will need to further discuss your child’s behavior. Please sign and return this to school on Monday!! Halloween is Monday! I can’t believe it’s already the end of October! The class is very excited for the parade and party this Monday at 2:15pm. We have been continuing to hear about all of the creative costumes students will be dressing in for Monday. I can’t wait to finally see them all! Please refer to the handout I sent home earlier this week for rules regarding Halloween costumes. Pumpkin Day! Ask your child about all of the fun things we did today on Pumpkin Day! We explored pumpkins in other first grade classrooms, played a fun game with “runaway” pumpkins, learned about a pumpkin’s life cycle, made observations on our pumpkin in science, carved our class pumpkin and counted seeds in math, and guessed which classmates’ decorated pumpkins were which by reading our pumpkin homework aloud. Math This week we continued in Chapter 4: Subtraction Facts to 10. In this chapter students are learning basic subtraction facts using strategies, such as the take-away concept, number bonds, and counting back and on. This week we learned how to solve real-world subtraction problems and create our own, practiced fact families, and continued practicing subtraction with number bonds. Please practice this at home with your child as some of the students are struggling with this concept. Writing In writing, we read Wallace’s Lists and the students learned all about making lists and practiced by making their own. The students also created their own “Monster in a Jar” and wrote about characteristics of their special monster!
