Command and Control Platform – Putting all the Pieces together
The CyberShuttle (RESCUE) and CyberAmbulance (WIISARD) were developed as prototypes for different kinds of mobile command/control and response vehicles. Alone or together, neither was sufficient to meet the needs of a disaster scenario requiring medical or non-medical response. As a result, a series of artifacts began to emerge with varying capabilities. Out of the original CyberShuttle came the need to expand its WiFi “bubble” beyond the bus itself. A local company, Entrée Wireless, productized technology which was developed by Calit2 researchers, allowing a 1XEVD0 data signal to be processed and shared over b. This solution was further improved upon by Calit2 researchers in the context of Mesh Networking research for RESCUE and applications for WIISARD – getting these “breadcrumbs” to dynamically reconfigure the network and intelligently store and re-send data in case of loss of connectivity. Other platforms emerged as solutions to different kinds of problems: the Wireless Pulse-oximeter transmits patient pulseox information in real-time over a wireless network and can be deployed in disaster-site triage scenarios, and Cal-Radio is an emerging platform for fully configurable network research, programmable down to the MAC layer thus allowing greater flexibility in applications development and implementation. Yet new needs emerge with each iteration: we plan to develop a Cal-Radio/Mesh hybrid with GPS and other location-based technology, on which the Always Best Located platform and various other sensors can be deployed, allowing for more complete situational awareness in packages which can be quickly and easily deployed at the site of a disaster.
