Classroom Procedures Beginning class: Come into the room quietly and go to your seat. Write the day’s assignments and homework in your planner. Begin your warm-up assignment. Ending class: The bell does not dismiss you; I do. Stay in your seat until dismissed. Make sure your work area is clean and chair is pushed in when you leave.
23
Classroom Procedures Leaving during class: Wait until I am free to ask permission. Sign out on the clipboard. Take a pink pass with you. Sign back in when you return. Moving around during class (sharpening pencil, throwing away papers, etc): Only one person may be up at a time. Don’t ask to get up, just do so as long as no one is talking to the class.
24
Classroom Procedures Class materials: You will need a spiral notebook for this class. This will be kept with your hanging folder (I will provide this) and left in the classroom. All assignments should be kept in your folder until you are told to recycle them. Other supplies: Pencil, paper, calculator (occasionally), planner. If you forget something, please ask to borrow what you need BEFORE class begins. Textbooks: Students will be issued a book to keep at home or in their lockers. We have a set of books that we will use in class.
25
Classroom Procedures Need extra help?: APP is your best option to see me for extra help or if you have questions. I am also available the first 5 minutes of lunch and before or after school by appointment.
26
Homework Homework will be rare this year. However, there will be times when you will need to assign yourself homework such as: not finishing classwork in class, needing extra practice if you are struggling with a topic, studying for tests (using website, notes, book, etc.). It is up to you to decide when you need to do extra work outside of class to be successful.

Other Policies/Grading Information
ABSENCES Being absent is NOT AN EXCUSE for incomplete work. DO NOT write “Absent” or “Wasn’t here” on top of a paper expecting that you will get credit for the work you missed. You can get your missed work by: Checking the “Been Absent” file crate. Going to the website. Asking a classmate. Missed labs may require you to come in during APP, watch a video on the website, or get make-up data.

Other Policies/Grading Information
SELF/PEER GRADING EXPECTATIONS When grading papers in class, you are expected to be HONEST and ACCURATE. If you are not sure what to mark, ask in class or circle the item you are unsure about. Any evidence of purposeful wrong grading will result in loss of points for the items in question as well as a referral to the dean for cheating. It is also your responsibility to check your paper for accuracy when you get it back. Any errors will be gladly corrected.
29
Other Policies/Grading Information
20% Formative (notes, classwork, homework, labs) 80% Summative (lab reports, exams, projects, spiral notebook) Re-takes will be offered only when all previous work is complete and satisfactory. No re-takes the last week of the quarter. Re-takes must be completed within 2 weeks of original assessment. For additional information, please see visit the “FYI” page of my website for a complete description of Proficiency Learning.

What’s wrong? Identify 6 different safety concerns shown in the picture below. Image:
37
The answers are … Don’t fool around during a lab. Move with caution.
Always wear safety goggles and aprons when doing an experiment. Always point test tubes and other items away from yourself and others when heating. Don’t eat or drink while doing a lab. Keep hair and other flammable objects away from flames. Don’t leave a flame unattended. Image:
38
PARTNER READING: Read at least 1 sentence but no more than 1 paragraph, THEN SWITCH. Sit “ear to ear”. Practically a whisper (other groups shouldn’t hear you).
39
No safety goggles Reached across flame Did not wash chemical off skin Pointed test tube towards face Smelled chemical without wafting Tasted chemicals Didn’t clean up before moving stations Didn’t read directions Did an unpermitted experiment Running Used broken glassware Flammable object near fire Didn’t properly clean up Injury not reported Didn’t wash hands after lab
