3
Introduction VoIP - Voice Over Internet Protocol Who has used VoIP?
Focus on IP Private Branch Exchange Long Distance carriers use IP to carry there voice traffic. Vonage Time Warner Insight will be coming soon 9/21/2018
4
Some Facts Com and Cisco go head to head with VoIP IP PBX release By June 2002 Cisco shipped more than 500,000 IP phones and more than 6,000,000 VoIP ports Who is in the VoIP market 3Com, Alcatel, Avaya, Cisco, Ericsson, Mitel Networks, Nortel, Siemens, NEC $500-$700 per IP phone handset has made it difficult for businesses to deploy All PBX vendors are in the market. D-Link and LinkSys are providing appliances for small businesses 9/21/2018
5
VoIP is a world of opposites
Unlike most IP applications voice is sensitive to jitter, delay, and packet loss Data has to be accurate but not timing Voice has to have timing but not accurate QOS, Quality of Service, is used to correct Jitter is the variation in delay in packet delivery which causes syllables to be lost. 9/21/2018

Internet Protocols VoIP can use both IAX – Inter Asterisk Exchange
TCP – Transmission Control Protocol UDP - User Datagram Protocol IAX – Inter Asterisk Exchange Proprietary protocol used for trunking Advantage only uses one port through firewalls Conserves bandwidth through the use of trunking SIP – Session Initiation Protocol Rapidly becoming the industry standard Requirements for SIP through firewall. SIP signaling: Ports 5060 to 5070 Real-Time Transport Protocol, RTP, audio: Ports 8766 to 35000 SIP does not support all features required in an IP PBX solution so vendors create their own proprietary protocol to provision handsets. 9/21/2018
7
Bandwidth Requirements
Codec – COder DECoder We will need at least 80 kilobits of capacity to the Asterisk server based on using G.711 codecs which converts analog voice to digital by sampling voice 8000 times a second at 8 bits. 80 kbts = 64 kbs + overhead. There are other voice encoding methods that get as low as about 4kbps. VoIP does not do fax with lossy codecs. As we change from codec to codec it affects voice quality. Cisco uses G.729 Codec which is 8 kbs. We can use G.729 but would need to purchase license. Any Questions on introduction to VoIP? 9/21/2018

Open Source Example Asterisk was released to the community for development by Mark Spencer. Mark Spencer also owns Digium who produces interface cards, a commercial version of Asterisk, and support. was created to ease the burden of install and maintenance of an Asterisk IP PBX and is a full feature Asterisk release. We are using because of ease of use. 9/21/2018

Advantage of OpenSource Asterisk
Date: Wed, 16 Nov :48: We are proud to announce that Asterisk has been released! This release of Asterisk contains over 3,000 improvements on version 1.0, including hundreds of new features and applications. We want to extend our thanks to all the community members whose contributions have made this release possible; without their coding, support, testing and other involvement we would not have achieved this milestone! Mark Spencer and Kevin P. Fleming Continuous improvement process Bug Tracking CVS is a popular version control system and can be used to maintain most current platform. 9/21/2018
