Transverse/Longitudinal waves
Transverse waves are those in which the vibrations are at right angles to the direction of travel Longitudinal waves are those in which the vibrations are in the same direction as the direction of travel Sound waves and seismic waves are longitudinal waves All electromagnetic waves and water waves are transverse waves Transverse/Longitudinal waves

Sound is made whenever an object vibrates
Sound waves Sound is made whenever an object vibrates Amplitude is the size of the vibrations The greater the amplitude, the louder the sound Frequency is the number of complete vibrations per second The greater the frequency, the higher the pitch of the sound Frequency is measured in Hertz, Hz Sound waves

Amplitude, Frequency & Wavelength
Amplitude is the height of a wave (maximum disturbance) Wavelength is the length of one complete wave Frequency is the number of complete waves passing a single point per second. Frequency is measured in Hertz (Hz) Wave speed = Frequency x Wavelength Energy is transferred in a wave but never particles Amplitude, Frequency & Wavelength

Ultrasonic waves A signal generator can produce electrical signals which can be converted to sound waves by a speaker. The sound waves can be greater than the hearing range for humans (ultrasonic waves). Ultrasonic waves can be used in industry for cleaning, quality control, and for pre-natal scanning Ultrasonic waves

Analogue and Digital Signals
Analogue signals are those that have the same wave pattern (frequency or amplitude) as the original speech or music Digital signals are binary code consisting of 1s and 0s Digital signals are of higher quality than analogue signals Signals become weaker as they travel. More information can be sent digitally in a given time than by analogue Analogue and Digital Signals
