What is satire? A literary technique in which behaviors or institutions (govt., religion, school, etc.) are ridiculed for the purpose of improving society Satire’s Goal: poke fun at human faults and foolishness in order to correct human behavior…CHANGE

Techniques of Satire Satire is achieved through the use of the following techniques: Exaggeration Incongruity Reversal Parody

Exaggeration To enlarge, increase, or represent something beyond normal bounds so that it becomes ridiculous and its faults can be seen. Ex. 2 years supply of ketchup packets

Incongruity To present things that are out of place or are absurd in relation to its surroundings.

Reversal To present the opposite of the normal order (e.g., the order of events, hierarchical order). Ex. Onion article about children use monitor to listen to crying adults

Parody To imitate the techniques and/or style of some person, place, or thing. Example: SNL skits
