Section 17.1: Translations
2
Objective(s): By following instructions, students will be able to: Draw the image of a figure under a translation
3
Def: A vector is a quantity that has both direction and magnitude.
Def: Initial point of a vector is the starting point. Def: Terminal point of a vector is the ending point.
4
Translation It is convenient to describe translations using vectors. A translation is a transformation along a vector such that the segment joining a point and its image has the same length as the vector and is parallel to the vector. For example, BB' is a line segment that is the same length as and is parallel to vector v .

8
explain 2A Preimage coordinates: (−2, 1) , (−3, -2) , and (−1, −2) . Vector: 〈4, 6〉
9
explain 2B Preimage coordinates: A(3, 0) , B(2, -2) , and C(4, −2) . Vector: 〈-2, 3〉
10
Your-Turn #2 Draw the preimage and image of each triangle under a translation along 〈-4, 1〉. Triangle with coordinates A(2,4), B(1,2), and C(4,2).
