3 WHAT IS DEMENTIA ? Dementia is a syndrome due to disease of the brain ,in which there is disturbance Of multiple higher cortical functions including memory ,thinking ,orientation , Comprehension ,calculation ,learning capacity ,language and judgement Usually is of a Progressive nature Although Dementia mainly affects older people ,it is not a normal part of ageing

4 Common Presentation of Dementia
People with dementia can present with problems in -Cognitive Function : Confusion ,Memory ,Problem solving -Emotional Control : Mood swings ,Personality Changes -Behaviour : Wandering ,aggression -Physical Health : Incontinence ,weight Loss -Difficulties in Performing daily activities

6 DEMENTIA DIAGNOSIS –ICD10
Objective Memory Loss ;Delayed Recall Reduction of at least one additive Cognitive Function (abstract thinking ,attention ,performing dual tasks) Obvious reduction compared to previous level of Functioning No signs of Delirium Reduction of Motivation /Social ability /Emotional Control Symptoms standing for at least 6 Months

One of the Most Concerning Symptom Presentation that carries a major Impact on the Carers are the Behavioral symptoms associated with Dementia Medication –Non Responsive Medication responsive Wandering Hoarding and hiding objects Social Withdrawal Social Inappropriateness Agitation Hallucination Depression Aggression

8 DEMENTIA WIDER IMPACT Dementia is one of the major causes of disability and dependency among Older People Worldwide It is Overwhelming not only for the people who have it ,but also for their carers And families .Physical ,Emotional and Economic Pressures can cause great stress To families and carers and support is required from the health ,social Financial and legal systems WHO 2017
