Bellwork 1. Two students designed an experiment to determine if the type of paper affects how far a paper airplane will glide. They made four identical paper airplanes, but they used four different kinds of paper. Next they launched each airplane using the same amount of force, and they measured the distance each one glided. 1st Paper Airplane: notebook paper 2nd Paper Airplane: printer paper 3rd Paper Airplane: construction paper 4th Paper Airplane: Tissue paper Identify the manipulated variable (independent variable) in this experiment. glide distance number of students type of paper

2. A candy company wants to determine what color they should make their new candies to maximize sales. They perform a scientific study at a number of shopping malls, offering bright purple, royal blue, and lime green colored candies. They ask the participants to rate the colored candies from their favorite to least favorite. It this experiment candy color is the...? qualitative variable independent variable c. control variable

3. Students want to determine which type of plant will best survive in a hot, dry environment. They place four different types of plants in identical pots, and put all of the plants by the same large window. They give each plant the same amount of water every day. Which of these is the independent variable for the students’ experiment? health of plant type of plant amount of sunlight

4. A fast food restaurant sells three main type of food (slices of pizza, hamburgers, and tacos). The restaurant owner wants to know which type of food is being sold the most. So over a period of 30 days he tracks how much each type of food is sold. What is the dependent variable in this experiment? a. The different cost for each type of food b. The amount of time that he tracked the food being sold (30 days) c. The amount of each type of food being sold

He uses 3 ink colors in 3 ballpoint pens in a series of experiments.
5. Chandler conducts an experiment to determine which ink color in ballpoint pens will last the longest before running out. He uses 3 ink colors in 3 ballpoint pens in a series of experiments. (1) Black ink pen, (2) Blue ink pen, (3) Red ink pen) He copies the same text over and over from his science book. He writes at the same speed each time, and he writes on the same kind of paper each time. What is the responding variable (dependent variable) in this experiment? The text from the book How long the ink lasts The ink color

6. What are the units for a thermometer?
Celsius Grams Newtons 7. What tool do you use to measure the mass of an object? Spring Scale Stopwatch Balance

EQ: Can I use procedures to identify controls and variables?
Independent Variables Copy in notes! In an experiment… …you should only test for ONE key thing at a time When you repeat the experiment… …only change this ONE key thing This ONE thing is called… AN Independent Variable Also known as the manipulated variable
15
The Independent Variable
EQ: Can I use procedures to identify controls and variables? Copy in notes! What is an independent variable? The one thing YOU change each time you duplicate an experiment Here is our simple memory trick to help you with this. Independent variable begins with the letter “I” So, remember the letter “I” Imagine yourself doing the experiment and ask yourself “What ONE thing will I change when repeating the experiment?” That one thing will be The Independent Variable Also known as the manipulated variable

17
EQ: Can I use procedures to identify controls and variables?
The independent variable is the TYPE OF SOFT DRINK

The independent variable is distance from sunlamp which is connected with the amount of sunlight.

Dependent Variables DEPENDENT VARAIABLE
Copy in notes! EQ: Can I use procedures to identify controls and variables? Dependent Variables What is a dependent variable? Other factors that change because of the independent variable. These are the things that YOU DO NOT CHANGE…they change on their own while you are making observations. In other words, “anything that changes on its own” while the experimenter is observing it will be a …. DEPENDENT VARAIABLE Also called the “REPSONDING VARAIBLE”

Elbow Partner! Dependent Variable?? HINT: What is a response that will happen without you doing it?
22
EQ: Can I use procedures to identify controls and variables?
The dependent variable is their reaction (facial expressions).
