The North Carolina A&T State University Police Department (UPD) includes a staff of over 100 sworn and non-sworn personnel, organized into several areas: Office of the Chief, Administrative Services, Support Services, Patrol, CID (Criminal Investigations Division), K-9, Bike Patrol, Telecommunications, Accreditation, Residence Security Officers and Contracted Security. All of our commissioned officers are certified police officers in accordance with rules established by the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education and Training Standards Commission. All UPD commissioned police officers have successfully completed training and passed the Criminal Justice Education and Training Standards licensing exam. They all are in compliance with Criminal Justice Education and Training Standards mandated in-service training that is required on an annual basis. The Department has been accredited by CALEA (The Commission on Accreditation of Law Enforcement Agencies) since Recently the department completed its first re-accreditation and we received the new award in July With this accreditation, the department has met the requirements of over 400 standards that have been set forth by CALEA. NC A&T is one of five UNC institutions with an accredited police department. 3 Our department has implemented the following programs to effectively address student safety on and around campus. We implemented a new computerized software enabling information sharing program with GPD and other law enforcement agencies. The communications center was greatly enhanced with the upgrade of additional CCTV software, cameras and monitors. Six new officers have been hired. These officers use patrol techniques by way of foot, bike and Segway patrols. A Robbery Response Task Force was formed to deter possible acts of robbery and other potential crimes. Crime prevention efforts with residence life were enhanced. Contracted security officers are utilized to patrol the exterior of campus buildings and streets nightly. Security needs analysis of off-campus apartments (student housing) showing necessary security upgrades were conducted. We've recently implemented vehicle patrols of off-campus apartment complexes near the campus. Additionally, due to the recent acts of violence that have taken place at schools and universities throughout the country, a “Threat Assessment” team was formulated. The North Carolina A&T State University Police & Public Safety Department is committed to creating an environment in which teaching, research, community life and public service may flourish. 7 T3 Motion One of the most energy efficient ways to move humans and cargo from point-to-point without producing any environmentally harmful gas emissions. T3 Motion will increase the departments visibility around campus and optimize performance efficiencies in regards to providing a safer environment for our students and community. Our two electronic vehicles will be easier to see in large crowds, standing more than 7 1/2 feet high and strikes a commanding presence. The T3 Series is designed to enhance patrols to save driver energy and increase response times. We are the first school in the UNC System to secure the T3 vehicles and the first in the City of Greensboro. | Explore. Discover. Become.

9 Telecommunications Division
The University Police Department employs eight (8) full-time Communications Officers Function 24 hours a day, 365 days a year Receive emergency and non-emergency calls Daily operations include, but are not limited to Illegally parked vehicles Sick calls Package pickup and delivery Welfare checks on students Lost or stolen property UPD telecommunicators use modern technology to keep abreast of crime reported directly to the UPD UPD telecommunicators monitors the campus wide electronic security systems administration and support. Currently, this includes: Emergency blue light telephones Building alarm systems Fire alarms Electronic access control systems and closed-circuit video Monitoring over 400 cameras for safety and security purposes | Explore. 10 Property Security Officers
The University Police Department employs twenty-six (26) full-time Property Security Officers who work in two sub-divisions: Residence Hall Security Building Security These officers play an integral role in patrolling and securing the safety of the campus. Actively patrol buildings and property on foot. The officers will work a twelve (12) hour shift, 6:00 P.M. until 6:30 A.M. Female residence halls have 24 hour coverage. 11 Lankford Contract Security Officers
Contract security Officers actively patrol academic buildings and the campus on foot. They will patrol academic buildings during the evening and early morning hours consistently checking and rechecking entrance doors, ground floor windows and identifying suspicious persons in and around the buildings. Their deployment will decrease the frequency of larcenies of state property and deter vagrants during evening classes and to prevent the unauthorized entry of any persons after the building has closed. During the 2011/2012 academic year, contracted security for foot patrols have been increased due to our new after hour traffic plan. These officers will constant monitor parking lots and areas heavily concentrated with pedestrian traffic. They will continue to observe these aforementioned areas, report any and all violations of state law, and University rules and regulations. | Explore. Discover. Become.

12 Rape Aggression Defense (R.A.D.)
The Rape Aggression Defense System is a program of realistic self-defense tactics and techniques for women. The Rape Aggression Defense System is dedicated to teaching women defensive concepts and techniques against various types of assaults by utilizing easy, effective and proven self-defense tactics Taught by nationally certified R.A.D. Once a woman has graduated from the class, she becomes a lifetime member. The RAD Systems curriculum is taught at over 400 colleges and universities across the United States and Canada, and is the only self-defense program ever to be endorsed by the International Association of Campus Law Enforcement Administrators (IACLEA). RAD classes are offered at no charge to university students, faculty and staff. | Explore. Discover. Become.

13 Community Action Team (CAT)
Consists of two (2) bike officers and one (1) K-9 patrol officer. CAT officers work a modified schedule 6pm-4am. The mission of the Community Action Team (CAT) is to identify and proactively address serious, complex, or chronic crime issues that impact the university community.  The team aggressively works to suppress criminal activity and address quality of life issues in a proactive manner to include but not limited to possession, distribution or usage of any and all controlled substances. They focus their attention to areas with large concentrations of pedestrian traffic and patrol those areas by the way of foot, bike, Segway, T3 and ATV patrol. They offer crime preventive information and address activities of the public that are not safe or increase their chances of being victimized. This team is also tasked with supporting the patrol division in its patrol activities during periods of high activity and periodically patrolling the interior of residence halls and assisting Residence Hall Security Officers with their patrols. | Explore.
