Minority group: group discriminated against Not numerical Dominant group: group that discriminates Patriarchy? Matriarchy? Females are a minority even though they outnumber males!

Sex Typing of Work All societies are sex typed
(certain activities associated with each sex) “Female” activities in one society may be considered “male” in another society

Prestige of Work Greater prestige given to male activities—regardless of the activities Example: Delivering babies in the US. Midwife: early years considered “women’s work” and given low prestige Medical doctor: males took over this job and medicalized it and was given higher prestige

Rwanda: 63% of lower house, 38% of upper house. Cuba: 48%, Sweden: 43%, Mexico: 37% Some Arab countries: Women cannot vote US: 19.6%: 2016 1,805 served in the 50 state legislatures (24.4%)

The Pay Gap On average, in almost every nation, women are paid less than men -Denmark: Women earn 2% more than men Globally: Average 18% less US: .79 cents to the dollar (national avg.) We will explore the reasons behind this later. WOMEN MEN

Some Possibilities… Due to bearing children, women given tasks related to child/home care-taken for granted Men can be absent from the society “Rescue/take care” of group=greater prestige Prestige=power=patriarchy (male dominance) Cycle continues in contemporary times
