I. Imperialism A. Policy where stronger nations extend their economic, political or military control over weaker territories.

II. U.S. Imperialism U.S. needed raw materials to support industrial expansion & new markets to sell goods Wanted to build up military strength – match other countries Belief in Anglo-Saxon Superiority Determination to keep Europe out of the W. Hemisphere

III. Hawaii Americans owned ¾ of wealth (sugar plantations)
Americans controlled govt. Only wealthy landowners could vote Tax was placed on Hawaiian sugar (McKinley Tariff of 1890) Americans called for annexation of Hawaii 1898 Hawaii became U.S. territory

Puerto Rico U.S. takes control of govt. after Spanish American War (1898) Gives U.S. strategic location in Caribbean – near Panama Puerto Ricans were not U.S. Citizens Becomes a commonwealth in 1952 Can make their own laws U.S. controls taxes & defense Can move freely to the U.S. Representatives in Congress – but can’t vote!
