IGETC Alphabet Soup Melynie: Here is what I’ve learned about IGETC….
IGETC - Intersegmental General Education Transfer Curriculum – if student completes the pattern, he or she meets the general education requirement for CSU OR UC. The courses included in the curriculum are important information for any potential transfer-bound student. Student can minimize unnecessary units by taking courses that fit into this pattern. This is not a REQUIREMENT for admission. Admissions office at CSU certifies IGETC. Students request certification at their Community College. A form detailing that the student meets requirements is sent to CSU or UC for approval. This benefits a number of students but comes with a warning for high unit majors… it may be advised that students in high-unit technical majors take specific General Education courses that can double count to meet the Gen Ed requirements AND the lower division requirements of the major.

LDTP Alphabet Soup Melynie:
LDTP – DEFUNCT – But is stands for: Lower Division Transfer Pattern. These were sets of courses comprised of general education and transfer prep that gave the student a clear pathway leading to a specific bachelor’s degree. Students who executed an LDTP agreement for a specific major at a specific CSU were guaranteed priority admission to that college. These agreements may be referenced in the CID project and in setting up the SB1440 degree templates.

ASSIST Alphabet Soup Melynie
ASSIST – Articulation System Stimulating Interinstitutional Student Transfer - Official articulation clearinghouse for public colleges and universities in California. Contains detailed listing of community college courses approved for: CSU and UC elective credit CSU GE IGETC GE for individual UC campuses Preparation for specific majors at individual CSU and UC campuses ASSIST really assists students and faculty! Students can look at how courses they take transfer to other CA colleges Faculty can use it to review which courses and programs at other CCs transfer to CA 4-year colleges Program review New program or course development

Alphabet Soup OSCAR Christie: (Here are the notes from the alphabet soup worksheet. What else would you like to say? It may be a good idea to include some information about the windows available to update… if you think that is relevant.) OSCAR – Online Services for Curriculum and Articulation Review. OSCAR is the database within ASSIST used to enter the course outline information for the universities to review.

C-ID Alphabet Soup Christie
C-ID – California Course Identifiers. Replacing CAN. CSU began creating their own course identifiers without input from CCC or UC. The C-ID program is designed to facilitate articulation and is an inter-segmental effort. The completion of this project has become a necessary step prior to the development of recommended templates for SB1440 degrees. There will be a number of opportunities to contribute to C-ID discussions. All discipline faculty have been asked to sign up for discipline list serves to facilitate sharing of relevant information relating to developing the course identifiers. Go to:

Alphabet Soup CAN Christie (would you like to comment on the use of CAN and the Articulation officer reactions when it went away?) CAN can’t, apparently (this was tied to the LDTP memorandum of understanding between the community colleges and CSU.)

CLEP Alphabet Soup Johnnie – discuss the resolution we drafted too!
CLEP – College Level Examination Program - Exams that are administered primarily to Military Service members. The CSU system has been regularly accepting successful test scores for academic credit. The UC system will not accept the scores. TAC (oh no, more soup…TAC stands for the Transfer and Articulation Committee) is working on a recommended template to guide articulation of test scores. The recommendation will be to grant credit for GE areas rather than specific courses.

AP – Advanced Placement, tests are administered at High Schools and CCs, CSUs, and UCs grant course OR GENERAL EDUCATION AREA credit based on a minimum score (usually 3, sometimes 4).

Alphabet Soup IB Johnnie – hand out the template that is up for adoption IB – International Baccalaureate – Course of study offered worldwide. Students take exams in multiple subjects and receive an IB certification. This is accepted throughout CC, CSU, and UC.

Terms Articulation Melynie: Now that we better understand our alphabet soup, we can discuss TRANSFER AND ARTICULATION! Articulation: For an individual course: The purpose of a Course-to-Course agreement is to determine if a specific course taken at one college will satisfy a requirement at another college. For a series of courses: General Education IGETC - Intersegmental General Education Transfer Curriculum (IGETC) is a general education program which community college students in California can use to satisfy lower-division general education requirements at any CSU or UC campus. Courses meeting the requirements of an IGETC area are approved at the system level. The CSU General education agreement - a general education program which community college students in California can use to satisfy the lower division GE requirements for the CSU campuses. Approved at the system level. General education breadth agreements – agreements between individual campuses and a transfer institution, these are more liberal and potentially more interesting to the student. Major Prep Major Preparation agreements specify the lower division courses required for a specific major at a specific 4-year institution. These are articulated by individual colleges through course-to-course articulation. SB 1440 will probably change this. The legislation states that a properly prepared student will get access into a CSU in a related program. This will likely (necessarily) lead to broader major-prep articulation agreements. Degrees are to be developed by the CCs Curriculum Committees will designate the entire degree as meeting the requirement (based on the bill!)

Transferability Terms
Christie: Define. How is a course transferable and what does that mean to our two main feeder systems? Transferability: For CSUs, a CCC curriculum committee designates – triggers submission of course for articulation to CSU. NOTE: a course can be “transferable” and not articulate. When that happens, at best, a student can use a transferable course as an elective if they have room in their major program. For UCs, CCC does not designate as transferable. Rather, a request is made for the articulation officer to request articulation. Decision is made by UC. Sometimes a course does not articulate but still receives a UC designation. When a community college course receives a “UC” designation, it means that it is UC transferable. Students will receive elective units only. Students need a minimum of 60 semester units for admission, and courses that are UC transferable (without IGETC) may count towards that admission requirement. For AICCU… what? Association of Independent California Colleges and Universities. Association collectively reviews IGETC and some accept the pattern. Association puts out a list of members and notes on the acceptance of IGETC.
