What are they and why are they useful?
Timelines What are they and why are they useful?
2
Timeline A timeline is a visual representation of key events that happen in chronological order. They can go across a page or down. We are going to create ours down, as it is a better use of the space on the paper.
3
Make sure you put your name and the date at the top!
To the left of the line put the year. To the right of the corresponding arrow write the description.
4
Task You are going to create a timeline of your life (so far)!
Include 5 – 10 key events that have happened in your life. You COULD include things like: Birth of your siblings Moving home Major birthdays Got your first bike or phone Went on a big trip

Now Let’s Create a Canadian Timeline
30,000BC to 15,000BC – The first people arrive in the area. They had crossed a land bridge from North-East Asia to north America. 0AD (approximately) – Jesus is born. 1000AD – Vikings explore what is now Nova Scotia, Newfoundland and New Brunswick 1497AD – John Cabot sets sail to Canada’s east coast to claim it for England 1534AD – Jacques Cartier claims the area now known as Quebec for France. He uses the Huron-Iroquois word for village or community, “Kanata”, to describe it.

Now Let’s Create a Canadian Timeline (continued)
1608AD – Quebec City founded, the capital of New France, by Samuel de Champlain. 1609AD – Native exposed to firearms for the first time DON’T WRITE THIS DOWN Champlain helps the Huron and Algonquins defeat a much larger force of Iroquois, exposing them to firearms for the first time. We will fill in more events as we go through the course.

Think, Pair, Share Think about what we mean by the words:
Continent Country Colony In your table groups can you come up with an example of each?
8
Answer A continent is a big piece of land with more than one country. North America is a continent. Canada, United States of America and Mexico are a part of North America. South America is another continent. Europe is a continent. France, England and Spain are a part of Europe. France is a country. People who live in France are French. England is a country. People who live in England are English.
9
Answer (continued) A colony is land that belongs to a country but the colony is far away or overseas. Usually the country sends its people to live on the colony and follow its laws, language and culture. For example, before Hong Kong was an English colony it was a part of China. After the Opium War, China lost and had to give Hong Kong to England. So Hong Kong became an English colony and the official language became English. Colonization is what happens when one country takes over and colonizes another place. Note: Hong Kong has now been given back to China.
