Making Inferences Why make inferences? When to make inferences
Making inferences helps you combine the information you already know, to what is happening in the text. This helps you increase your understanding and draw conclusions. When to make inferences Before reading: Helps set goals and establish purpose During reading: Helps improve understanding of issues and themes After reading Helps interpret the text and improve understanding

Ask Questions Asking questions before, during, and after reading can help you: Clarify confusing vocabulary and meaning Deepen your understanding of a text Three types of questions: Literal Questions: asks about information that is directly stated Inferential Questions: Asks about what is implied as well as directly stated Evaluative Questions: Asks about the ideas in the text, drawing on the text and your own ideas

Steps to reading a graphic text: Scan the whole document to get an overall impression. What is the authors purpose? Who is the audience? 2. What features attract the most attention? Why does the author want you to notice these? 3. Pay attention to information in graphs, charts, and maps Make sure you understand these

4. Examine photos and illustrations How do they connect to the document? What ideas do they convey? Do they tell a story? 5. Look for graphic cues like arrows, symbols or lines that help you find to movement or direction of important information 6. Identify how the graphic features are connected to each other and to the words in the text

Important tip for reading graphic texts: Words have great importance in graphic texts take time to pay special attention to how they are presented. Their size, color, and punctuation marks allow you to infer how those features influence meaning

Media: Tools used to store and deliver information or data. There are several different media forms Media Form Print Magazine, newspaper, ads, posters, billboards, book covers Oral Radio programs, music, interviews Visual Paintings, photos, photo essays Electronic Websites, podcasts, TV shows, text messages, pop-up ads.

Effective media texts are created when producers combine a wide variety of elements that appeal to a specific audience. Certain media texts arrange their elements in specific ways to achieve their purpose: Print Media Text Some Common Elements and How They are Used Magazine Covers with a large title and short subheadings. Organized in sections. Graphics Newspaper Organized in sections, articles editorials, letters, ads… eye catching photos Graphic Novel Cells or frames, text bubbles, narration, color and shading Poster Strong visual, short text, fonts, font size, logo, slogan.

Steps to analyze the effectiveness of a media text: Consider the purpose of the text. How are the elements used to achieve the purpose Consider the intended audience. Will the elements appeal to the intended audience Evaluate how effectively the individual elements work together how will the audience respond to the media text? Is that the response the media producers desired?

Practice: What form of media text is the image an example of? Poster What is the purpose of the image? To persuade people to see the movie Who is the audience? Fans of the series, adults, people who enjoy sci-fi movies… How effectively do the elements work together? A strong visual of the characters accompanied by interesting title, and a short text description. This would be a fairly effective poster.

Practice: What form of media text is the image an example of? Comic What is the purpose of the image? To entertain Who is the audience? Potentially anyone who enjoys Garfield How effectively do the elements work together? Cells are used to show movement through the plot, text bubbles are used effectively to show dialogue, colour and shading are used appropriately. It is entertaining… This is an effective text

Practice: What form of media text is the image an example of? Magazine What is the purpose of the image? To inform people of celebrity activity, sell items in ads entertain… Who is the audience? Teens who are interested in celebrities… How effectively do the elements work together? Interesting cover with many sub headings that list content, and strong attention grabbing photos This is a fairly effective magazine cover
