2 Getting the Idea All living things must be able to reproduce!
Reproduction: Process by which organisms produce more organisms like themselves. Organisms will transfer genetic information to their offspring. The 2 main types of reproduction: Asexual Sexual

3 Asexual Reproduction:
Mode of reproduction by which offspring arise from a single parent, and inherit the genes of that parent only.

Binary Fission Budding Fragmentation Mitosis

5 Asexual Method: Binary Fission
The parent organism literally divides in two, producing two daughter organisms Main way bacteria cells reproduce!

6 Asexual Method: Budding
A new “daughter” organism grows on the “mother” cell The offspring organism is smaller than the parent organism The “daughter” organism will remain attached as it grows, detaching only after it’s mature

7 Asexual Method: Fragmentation
An organism splits into fragments Each fragment develop into mature, fully grown individuals

8 Asexual Method: Mitosis
Eukaryotes use mitosis to make new cells. These cells enable the organism to: Grow Larger Replace damaged cells

9 Advantages No mate needed Can increase the population rapidly
Perfect for immobile organisms! Can increase the population rapidly Efficient! *Asexual reproduction is perfect in a stable environment to which the parent is well suited*

10 Disadvantages No diversity!
All offspring vulnerable to the same threats Produces offspring Identical to the parents Offspring will inherit any mutations of the parent

11 Sexual Reproduction Creation of a new organism by combining the genetic material of two organisms.

Internal Fertilization External Fertilization

13 Method: Internal Fertilization
Sperm and Egg cells meet internally

14 Method: External Fertilization
A sperm cell is united with an egg cell outside of either organism

15 Advantages Diversity in organisms
Crossing over Independent assortment Offspring less likely to have mutations show up

16 Disadvantages Requires a mate to reproduce
May be hard to find Organisms may spend much of their energy on finding a mate Population increases are limited Sexually reproducing organisms often have high parental care

17 In your notebook on Pg. 49… Underneath your notes sheet, create and fill in some sort of graphic organizer comparing and contrasting the advantages and disadvantages of asexual and sexual reproduction Be creative with your organizer!

18 Find a partner or two… Create a “tweet” on pg. 44 of your BIN summarizing something from your notes today. It MUST be appropriate and include at least one relevant/related #hashtag Ex: If you want it done right you gotta do it yourself #asexual #clone
