The First Crusade (1095-1099) Ordered by: Pope Urban 2
Victor: Won by the Christians Reason: Military expedition to aid the Byzantine Empire. Remember we discussed the Byzantine Empire in the Religion Unit?

Second Crusade (1147-1149) Ordered by: Pope Eugene Third.
Victor: Won by the Muslims. Reason: Response to the fall of the country of Edessa. Which was a crusader state created after the success of the first crusade.

Third Crusade (1189 - 1204) Ordered by: Pope Gregory 8th
Victor: Won by the Christians but they failed in their objective to conquer Jerusalem. Reason: Attempt to reconquer the Holylands from Saladin.

The Fourth Crusade (1202–04) Ordered by: Pope Innocent the third Victor: A sequence of events culminated in the Crusaders sacking the city of Constantinople, the capital of the Christian-controlled Byzantine Empire. No clear winner or loser. Reason: Wanted to reconquer Muslim controlled Jerusalem.

Other Crusades There were other later crusades but we will only focus on these four for today. For example, there was a Children’s Crusade. All of these Children ended up being enslaved by the Muslims and never returned home.

Your Task! Complete the storyboard of the crusades on the A3 paper provided. You need to use text, speech bubbles and pictures to summarize each of the four crusades discussed.

Enrichment: You are a Medieval Pope planning one of the crusades
Pick one of the crusades discussed. Think of reasons to persuade knights, kings and nobles to join your crusade. Think of a funny but accurate slogan/sentence to end your essay!
