5 Purpose of Reproduction
To make sure a species can continue. Definition: Reproduction is the process by which an organism produces others of its same kind.

6 Sexual Reproduction Sexual Reproduction
1. ALWAYS TWO sex cells: sperm and egg 2. Sperm and egg join= fertilization 3. Offspring look different from parent (mixed DNA)

9 Asexual Reproduction A new organism (sometimes more than one) is produced from one organism. The offspring will have hereditary material uniform with the hereditary material of the parent organism. This means they will be genetically alike.

12 Fission Also called binary fission.
Becoming two by division of the complete organism. A type of cell division.

1. Organism divides in half 2. 2 identical daughter cells produced 3. Daughter cells are half the parent’s size 4. Daughter cells grow, then divide too 5. In bacteria Binary Fission

16 Budding Process by which a new, duplicate plant or animal begins to form at the side of the parent and enlarges until an individual is created. Very common in plants;

Budding 1. Small bud grows out of parent cell 2. Two different sized cells made (with identical DNA) 3. Bud breaks off and grows 4. In yeast and hydra

20 Regeneration The ability to restore lost or damaged tissues, organs or limbs. It is a common feature in invertebrates, like worms and starfish.

Regeneration 1. Repair/ grow lost body parts 2. Left over cells divide to make more cells 3. Lobsters, starfish, lizards

23 IMPORTANT! Asexual reproduction results in offspring that are genetically identical to the parent organism Sexual reproduction results in offspring that are genetically different from the parent organisms

Advantages Disadvantages Requires only one parent All offspring genetically identical Can populate an area efficiently If the environment becomes hostile all are at risk

Advantages Disadvantages Genetic information is shared in sexual reproduction = variety is produced in the species A species with a lot of variation is much less susceptible to any one kind of attack (i.e.… disease, parasites etc…) Organisms have to expend energy in the synthesis of sex organs, finding a mate, courtship, and mating. Much slower Less efficient
