3 ROYGBV

4 Warm Up for Your Eyes

5 can clearly see objects through them
Based on the interactions of light with matter, we classify materials as: transparent - readily transmits light; can clearly see objects through them translucent - transmits, but diffuses, light; cannot see objects clearly through them opaque - transmits no light; cannot see through them

6 Only visible light is seen as color
WHITE light is composed of all colors. Red, orange, yellow, green, blue, violet in order of increasing frequency or decreasing wavelength. Where is pink light? Only visible light is seen as color

7 Red, blue, and green are called
primary colors or secondary pigments Additive Colors are for the combination of light, not pigments (paint) Combining primary additive colors give you the secondary colors: yellow, magenta, cyan Mixing all primary additive colors makes WHITE. Mixing Light Video Close up version

8 Cyan, yellow, and magenta are called
primary subtractive colors Subtractive Colors are for the combination of pigments (paint), not light Combining primary subtractive colors give you the primary additive colors: red, blue, green Mixing all subtractive colors makes BLACK

9 Subtractive Colors All pigments can be made from cyan, magenta, and yellow This is how color printers work

10 Complimentary Colors Red and cyan, blue and yellow, green and magenta
Complimentary colors form white light. Complimentary pigments form black pigment. Subtractive colors absorb their complement, removing it from the color you see

11 Practice What color will you see when green and red light shine on a white piece of paper? A: Yellow What color will you see when green and red light shine on a blue piece of paper?
