Introduction to Measurement
SOL 6.9 By: Jennifer Del-Castillo John F. Kennedy Middle School
2
What you need to know First things first, you need to understand the basics There are two systems of measurement US/Customary System which we use here Then there is the metric system which is used all over the world
3
Measurement Basics Length: is the distance of something measured
Volume/Capacity: how much something can hold ( generally liquid) Weight: how much something weighs Mass: how much space something takes up
4
US/Customary System The US/Customary system has many different units of measurement Each unit has a completely different name They also have completely different conversion factors
5
Metric System The metric system has base unit and many different prefixes
6
Metric Units of Measurement
Meters: Measures length Liters: Measures volume or capacity Grams: measures weight/mass
7
Units of Measurement: Volume
US System Cups Pints Quarts Gallons Fluid Ounces Metric System Liters
8
Units of Measurement: Length
US System Inches Feet Yards Miles Metric Meters
9
Units of Measurement: Weight/Mass
US System Ounce Pound Tons Metric Gram

Sol 6.9 measurements 1 inch is about 2.5 centimeters.
1 foot is about 30 centimeters. 1 meter is a little longer than a yard, or about 40 inches. 1 mile is slightly farther than 1.5 kilometers. 1 kilometer is slightly farther than half a mile.
