2 Do Now “A newly ascendant (rising in power) conservative movement achieved several political and policy goals during the 1980s and continued to strongly influence public discourse in the following decades.” Read: “The New Right” and highlight causes of the New Right forming. How did this movement influence the Election of 1980?

3 Election of 1980 Why was Reagan’s 1980 election victory a milestone (watershed election)? Conservatives enacted: Tax Cuts: “Reaganomics,” “supply-side,” “trickle-down” economics Tax cuts for wealthy to stimulate economic growth Similar to policies of 1920s under Secretary of Treasury Andrew Mellon Deregulation of Industries: Reagan promised in his campaign to decrease environmental regulations “Conservative beliefs regarding the need for traditional social values and a reduced role for government advanced in U.S. politics after 1980.”
