Intro/Background WWI-huge economic growth in the United States
High levels of industry-also many new/emerging inventions New cultural dynamic-people wanted vast array of goods Economy starts booming Based on what we discussed last unit, why did World War I lead to vast economic growth in the United States? What were some of the new and improved inventions of the 1920s?

Enables people to buy goods over longer period of time (ie credit cards) Several reasons for buying on credit Desire to fit in Can’t afford goods Advertising Effectiveness of Advertising Several Things bought on credit Cars Appliances Stocks?!?! Almost everything What were the positive effects of the widespread use of credit on Americans in the 1920s? What were the negative effects of widespread use of credit on Americans in the 1920s? Advertising Booms in the 1920s Used for product marketing
Convinced Americans they needed products Helped drive the consumer mania. Has socially and economically controlled many aspects of our lives since the 20s. Do you have a favorite advertisement? Why is it your favorite advertisement? Do you regularly buy that good or did you buy it as a result of the commercial? Can you sing any commercials? Have you memorized an ad that you heard on TV or the radio because you’ve heard it so much?

King Auto Most Americans could afford the automobile
Thanks to the assembly line Americans bought them and did everything in them U.S. developed a car culture Taking care of them Going to auto shows Travelling Vacationing Going to the park Etc. What did the mass production of the automobile do to the American infrastructure (buildings and roads needed for the operation of a society)? How did the assembly line help to create a consumer culture in the United States?

Consumerism Due to an increased standard of living
Luxuries more available and affordable Due to higher wages Auto sales increase dramatically Chain stores emerge Low prices Convenience Satisfying the unending need to buy stuff. Why were Americans buying more goods and services in the United States? What types of goods were they buying? Make a list of things you consider a luxury in your life. Why do you consider them a luxury?
