4 Personal Reading Every day of class, we will start with independent silent reading. Please pick a book that you think that you will like. If you don’t like it, feel free to switch books. Each student will conference about their books to me and other students.

7 Phones and restrooms Please do not use your electronic devices in this classroom unless you have permission from me. Please limit your restroom passes for emergencies only (2 times per quarter—maximum). Please write an excuse note to me with the date and time on it before asking to leave.

8 What is Honors ELA 9? A year-long required class
Reading, writing, listening, speaking, and viewing Textbook covers many genres of literature, and we will be doing multiple kinds of writing. We will be preparing for skills that will help with Honors ELA 10 and Advanced Placement offerings.

9 What is Honors ELA 9? (cont.)
Several formal and informal writings, including: personal narrative, timed writings, literary analysis, problem-solution, persuasion, cause-effect, and research papers. At least one oral presentation per semester. Frequent review sessions for the Michigan Merit Exam (SAT) in the future.

Major written works will include: To Kill a Mockingbird (Lee) Romeo and Juliet (Shakespeare) The Odyssey (Homer) Fahrenheit 451 (Bradbury) Inherit the Wind (Lawrence and Lee) Of Mice and Men (Steinbeck)

Relevant current articles are reviewed and analyzed regularly One Book, One School program Alignment of Honors ELA 9 with the vision of APHS, i.e. encouraging the intellectual growth, creativity, self-discipline, democratic responsibility and physical and mental health Collins Writing Program

13 Question and Answer Thank you for your attention, and contact me if you have any questions or concerns. My web-site has a lot of pertinent information, including lesson plans, biographical information, and helpful links for reading and writing. Students have access to the computers throughout the school (5 in here) Students can use the charging stations for their device on a first come/first serve basis.
