1 Unit 6 Notes: The Cell Cycle
Tuesday Unit 6 Notes: The Cell Cycle

2 (1) Big Ideas: Cells spend most of their “life” preparing to divide.
Cells prepare for division because: Need to Grow Need to Copy DNA Need to Check for Errors

3 (2) The Cell Cycle Interphase: Cell Division (M-Phase): G1 Phase
S Phase G2 Phase Cell Division (M-Phase): Mitosis  If a Non-Sex Cell Meiosis  If a Sex Cell

4

5 (3) G1 Phase 1st Growth Phase: G1 CheckPoint: Cell Increases in Size.
Extra Proteins & Organelles are made. G1 CheckPoint: After G1 Phase Makes sure enzymes are ready for DNA Replication. Makes sure extra proteins and organelles are made.

6

7 (4) S Phase Synthesis Phase: Exact copy of cell’s DNA is made:
Extra DNA is Synthesized. DNA is Replicated or Copied. Exact copy of cell’s DNA is made: Mistakes  Termination or Cancer. DNA copied inside nucleus.

8

9 (5) G2 Phase 2nd Growth Phase: G2 CheckPoint: Cell Grows More.
Remaining Proteins & Organelles Made. G2 CheckPoint: After S and G2 Phase. Makes sure DNA was replicated correctly. Makes sure all proteins and organelles were copied.

10

11 (6) M Phase (Cell Division):
Mitosis OR Meiosis

12 Let’s Watch A Cartoon…
