Kwakiutl Indians

Where did they live? Northwest coast of North America
Along the Pacific Ocean Washington, Oregon, Northern California, up into British Columbia (Canada) Along the east are mountains LOTS of rain and breezy Temperatures are warm, but get cooler as you move inland

Use the land to survive. Most food came from the ocean or other waterways Salmon was most important food Sea otters, seals, fish, whales Hunt bear and deer Sweet berries, oysters, clams

Trees in the Pacific Northwest are some of the tallest in the world.
Kwakiutl tribes were expert wood craftsmen. Wood was used for shelters, clothing, totem poles, dug-out canoes Canoes housed 20 people including room for the fish they catch

How did they live? Longhouses / Cedar-plank house
Windowless, long, and narrow Many family members (50 people) Hole in the center ceiling for smoke Most of the time was spent indoors to escape rain Built along the shore and sometimes painted like totem poles

What did they wear? Climate was great so very little clothes were needed Summer- men hardly wore clothes except for a breechcloth Tunics Women would wear apron-type skirts made from bark Winter- wear a rob made from the hair of a mountain goat Wore moccasins Cedar-bark hats

Ceremonies Potlatch Weddings
Potlatch for first salmon caught for the season Ritual- throw the salmon bones and carcass back in the same spot the first salmon was caught that season

*Describe the similarities and differences of the Kwakiutl and Nez Perce tribes. *How did Kwakiutl survive off the land? *How did the surrounding land influence the life of the Kwakiutl?
