About Me I was born in Hawaii I grew up on the Island of Oahu
My family is from Oahu and Maui I went to school at the University of Hawaii I lived in Hawaii for 40 years

Geography The islands are formed from lava from volcanoes
There are 2 types of lava A’a is rough and moves very slow Pahoehoe is smooth and moves fast

Ancient Hawaiians The Polynesians explorers set sail across the Pacific ocean to discover Hawaii They were expert navigators who could use just the stars and the sun to travel the ocean They used patterns in the weather and watched the sea birds and animals to help them find land They used large outrigger canoes to sail across the ocean

Ancient Hawaiians Settlers brought many plants - coconuts, banana, sugarcane, sweet potato, taro, and breadfruit. They also brought many animals – dogs, chickens, pigs, and rats

How They Lived Hale - houses were made of dried grass, sticks and sometime rocks They used kukui nuts for candles at night Food was cooked in an imu – underground pit

The traditional music is chanting and gourds Modern Hawaiian music includes ukulele and guitars

Ipu – Dried out gourd Ka’eke’eke – Bamboo tubes creates a hollow sound Pahu – Made from sharkskin stretched over a hollow log

Kalua Pig – roasted and shredded pork Lau lau – pork wrapped with taro leaves Poi – mashed taro Poke – raw marinated fish Lomi salmon - salted salmon mixed with tomatoes and onions Haupia – coconut custard bar

Growing up in Hawaii It never grew cold! We only wore shorts and t-shirts When it rained there was almost always a rainbow Lots of hiking Went to the beach almost every weekend We had to fly every where. No road trips possible. Best food in the world!
