2 What is a Sonnet? English Sonnet Italian Sonnet The English sonnet is made up of three quatrains (four lines - abab) and one couplet at the end (two lines - aa). An Italian sonnet is made up of an octet (eight lines - abbaabba) and a sestet (six lines - either abcabc or ababab).

3 Tips and Warnings Don’t write in Pen. Plan to erase a lot.
In the Italian sonnet, use an a-b-b-a-a-b-b-a rhyme scheme for the first section (called the 'octave'), and a rhyme scheme of c-d-e-c-d-e or c-d-c-d-c-d in the second section (called the 'sestet'). Many modern sonnets do not rhyme at all, but instead simply present 14 lines with 10 syllables each.
