1 Building a Legacy Worth Leaving A Study in Hebrews 11 Harry W. Lewis

2 Session Eleven: No Compromise
By faith the walls of Jericho fell down after they were encircled for seven days. By faith the harlot Rahab did not perish with those who did not believe, when she had received the spies with peace. And what more shall I say?

3 Session Eleven: No Compromise
For the time would fail me to tell of Gideon and Barak and Samson and Jephthah, also of David and Samuel and the prophets: who through faith subdued kingdoms, worked righteousness, obtained promises, stopped the mouths of lions, quenched the violence of fire, escaped the edge of the sword, out of weakness were made strong, became valiant in battle, turned to flight the armies of the aliens.

4 Session Eleven: No Compromise
Women received their dead raised to life again. Others were tortured, not accepting deliverance, that they might obtain a better resurrection. Still others had trial of mockings and scourgings, yes, and of chains and imprisonment. They were stoned, they were sawn in two, were tempted, were slain with the sword. They wandered about in sheepskins and goatskins, being destitute, afflicted, tormented— of whom the world was not worthy.

5 Session Eleven: No Compromise
They wandered in deserts and mountains, in dens and caves of the earth. And all these, having obtained a good testimony through faith, did not receive the promise, God having provided something better for us, that they should not be made perfect apart from us. Hebrews 11:30-40

6 Session Eleven: No Compromise
Building a legacy worth leaving does not require us to be prominent or famous. Rahab was a prostitute but ended up in the lineage of Christ Gideon was hiding from the Philistines in a wine press Samson was a womanizer But they left a legacy by faith: Subdued kingdoms Worked righteousness Obtained promises

7 Session Eleven: No Compromise
But they left a legacy by faith: Subdued kingdoms Worked righteousness Obtained promises Stopped the mouths of lions Quenched the violence of fire Escaped the edge of the sword Being weak were made strong Etc.

8 Session Eleven: No Compromise
The Legacy of Daniel and his friends: Babylonian Captivity Selected to be taught the ways of the Chaldeans (Daniel 1:3-4) Daniel was approximately 16 years old He held to his convictions in the midst of a pagan culture (Daniel 1:8) God’s favor was on them Without compromise, they were ten times better the Babylonians

9 Session Eleven: No Compromise
Daniel’s legacy in the Babylonian Kingdom Nebuchadnezzar’s Dream The King’s curve thrown the astrologers Daniel’s intervention: Gave God the proper credit (Daniel 2:28) Sought prayer (Daniel 2:14-19) Saved the astrologers Promoted to high rank in the kingdom Resulted in opposition from the ones saved – they sought to destroy Daniel When standing on convictions, there is a price to pay.

10 Session Eleven: No Compromise
The test of the Golden Image reveals the legacy of Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego They wouldn’t bend, they wouldn’t bow and they wouldn’t burn They didn’t bend to the king’s wishes They didn’t bow to the king’s image Vital truth: determine how we will respond prior to the circumstances Daniel 3:17-18) They didn’t burn: the ropes burned, but no smell of smoke on them

11 Session Eleven: No Compromise
Daniel’s faithfulness results in him being promoted by Darius the Mede His promotion causes jealousy and opposition The trap: Concerned the Law of His God Appealed to the pride of Darius Daniel was aware of the petition but prayed anyway Danger to his life did not cause him to compromise God’s intervention: closed the mouth of the lions

12 Session Eleven: No Compromise
Hebrews 11 reveals that not all who stood faithfully for God were spared They were not always promoted to prominence Their legacy was based on their faithfulness even in the face of death Our legacy will depend on our faithfulness to God in all circumstances
