Measurement and Graphing
2
Objectives I can… Describe each type of graph
State the necessary elements of a graph Determine which graph is best to use for a given set of data
3
Types of Graphs Line Graph Bar Graph Pie Chart Scatter Plot
4
Types of Graphs In general, graphs should have… Title Labeled axis
With units values are measured in if needed. The independent variable in the X-axis, depnadant viable on the y-axis Values at regular intervals along the axis A range that is appropriate
5
Types of Graphs Who’s Best at Thumb Wrestling?
Identify the problems with this graph
6
Types of Graphs
7
Line Graph Compares two variables
Slope of line indicates relationship between variables Good at showing specific values of data meaning that given one variable the other can easily be determined Show trends in data clearly meaning that they visibly show how one variable is affected by the other as it increases or decreases Enable the viewer to make predictions about the results of data not yet recorded
8
Line Graph
9
Bar Graph Compares Groups of Data Used with data obtained by counting
One axis has no value, other than ordering groups
10
Bar Graph
11
Pie Chart Pie charts display percentages
It is important to be aware of how pie charts can be misrepresented. There are two ways that this can happen: Leaving out one or more of the parts of the whole. Not defining what the whole stands for
12
Pie Chart
13
Scatter Plot Show how much one variable is affected by another.
The relationship between two variables is called their correlation Positive / negative correlations exist Usually consist of a large body of data
14
Scatter Plot
15
Graphing You must be able to look at your data and determine the type of graph you will need. Practice this on the next two slides.
