New S.A.T.’s - Math
2
How is the test organized?
3
Focus on Math that Matters
Three main areas of Math: 1.) Heart of Algebra (33% - 19 questions) linear equations, inequalities, systems, graphing, etc. 2.) Problem Solving and Data Analysis (29% - 17 questions) ratios, proportions, percentages, probability, analyzing data, etc. 3.) Passport to Advanced Math (28% - 16 questions) quadratics, non-linear equations, graphing non-linear equations 4.) Additional Topics (10% - 6 questions) geometry, trigonometry, complex numbers
4
Problems Grounded in Real-World Contexts
Math questions are situated in ᐤ science ᐤ social science ᐤ career ᐤ other real world scenarios
5
Test Summary Math Test – No Calculator 25 minutes 20 questions
Math Test – Calculator 55 minutes 38 questions
6
Types of Questions 1.) Multiple Choice (78%)
question followed by four options choose the best answer fill in the corresponding circle 2.) Grid-In (22%) solve the problem enter answer in the grid on the answer sheet
7
Grid-In Questions Only answers indicated by filling in the circle will be scored (you won’t receive credit for anything written in the boxes located above the circles) It doesn't matter in which column you begin entering their answers; as long as the responses are recorded within the grid area, you’ll receive credit
8
Grid-In Questions If the answer is a repeating decimal, students must grid the most accurate value the grid will accommodate All mixed numbers need to be converted to improper fractions before being recorded in the grid
9
Grid-In Questions Unless a problem indicates otherwise, answers can be entered on the grid as a decimal or a fraction Fractions like 3/24 do not need to be reduced to lowest terms The grid can only accommodate positive numbers and zero. If you solve a grid-in question and get a negative number, you know you did something wrong!
10
NO PENALTY FOR WRONG ANSWERS!
How is the test scored? NO PENALTY FOR WRONG ANSWERS! On the New S.A.T.’s there is no penalty for answering a question incorrectly. Therefore, be sure to answer every question!
11
Strategies 1.) Pace yourself
in general the questions go from easiest to hardest every question is worth the same (1 pt),except one grid-in question worth 4 pts. 2.) Mark up the test booklet 3.) Educated guessing Remember there is no penalty for guessing. If you don’t know the answer, make an educated guess. Cross out the answers you can eliminate
12
Strategies 4.) Booklet & Answer Sheet match up - Periodically check to make sure that the number of the question you’re about to answer matches the number on the test booklet. 5.) Stumped? Move on Don’t waste a lot of time on questions that stump you. Star the problem in the booklet and move on. Return to unanswered questions at the end. 6.) Pay attention to units and other key words
13
Strategies 7.) It may help to underline key information in the problem, draw figures to visualize the given information, or mark key information on graphs and diagrams provided. 8.) Plug in answers 9.) Beware of figures “Not Drawn to Scale” The one that “looks” right is usually the wrong one
14
Strategies 10.) Utilize the formulas/information they give you
15
Strategies 11.) My answer is not there? Look for other forms

KEY POINTS There is no penalty for wrong answers. Be sure to answer every question! There is a math section with calculators and a math section without calculators There are two types of questions: multiple choice and grid-ins Grid-ins can NOT have negative answers! Use the formulas they give you.
