The Canterbury Tales By: Domonique Mahoney

The Manciple

The Manciple is in charge of purchases and storage at an institute such as a college or court of law.

The Manciple works for the inn of court ( the temple ) in the Canterbury tales, which is a place where lawyers live or gather.

The Manciple is very frugal
The Manciple is very frugal. He makes sure he watches how he spends his money so he will have money when he really needs it.

The people quickly begin to question the guy’s ethics when they learn that the Manciple purchases with cash or credit because he always ends up ahead in his accounts. The people wonder how it is possible for the Manciple to be ahead in his accounts unless he is messing up the numbers somewhere.

The Manciple always comes out financially ahead of his learned masters, they think it’s a bit of irony. The Host raises more suspicions of the Manciple’s dishonesty near the end of the tales when he warns the Manciple that the cook may pay back his insults by finding fault with the Manciples financial accounts.
