Dracunculiasis (aka Guinea Worm Disease) is a neglected tropical disease caused by the nematode worm Dracunculus medinensis

Nematodes are diverse eukaryotes that are adapted to every ecosystem, accounting for 80% of all animals on earth

The Guinea worm has a complex life cycle with two hosts

The ONLY treatment is physically removing the worm

Guinea worm disease originally infected approx. 3

Prevention via providing clean water and educating people is the key
