2 Importance of Handwashing:
Handwashing is one of the most important things we can do to prevent foodborne illness.

3 Do people really not wash their hands?
New York City: 40% did not wash in Penn train station Chicago: 22% did not wash at the Navy Pier New Orleans Casino: 29% did not wash San Francisco Golden Gate Park: 31% did not wash their hands. Researchers hid in stalls or pretended to be combing their hair while observing men and women in public rest rooms across the nation

4 Continued… Atlanta Braves Game: 54% of men did not wash; 11% women did not wash. Based on the study, women are cleaner then men: 74% of women washed their hands compared to 61% of men.

5 Why is handwashing important?
Prevents spreading germs Germs are invisible Germs make you sick Hands are the most exposed part of your body to germs Washing hands keeps you healthy The more you wash, the healthier you will remain!

7 When is handwashing important?
Before eating, preparing, or serving food Whenever hands look, feel, or smell dirty After using the bathroom After handling raw meat, fish, poultry, and before touching other food

Cough or sneeze (Important to do these into a sleeve or tissue) After using common objects: money, door knobs, computer keys, telephone, lockers Touching animals Taking out the trash
