2 Where Did We Leave Off? The original 13 states are continuing their efforts to work as one united country. New States have joined the union. Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Kentucky, Tennessee, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, Missouri Wisconsin Territory, Iowa Territory The frontier is still attracting wagon loads of people seeking new opportunities and land. Conflicts between the Native Americans and the Spanish still exist.

3 From Sea To Shining Sea Leaders in the government hope that the United States continues to grow, thrive, and dominate. Citizens are encouraged to move West and expand their ideas, beliefs, and democratic principles. The mantra of the time was, Manifest Destiny

Discussion: What did you think it means? What does it represent? This painting (circa 1872) by John Gast called American Progress, is a representation of the modernization of the new west. Here Columbia, a personification of the United States, leads civilization westward with American settlers, stringing telegraph wire as she sweeps west; she holds a school book as well. The different stages of economic activity of the pioneers are highlighted and, especially, the changing forms of transportation.
