The SAT Suite of Assessments
The SAT has been redesigned where it will be the anchor of a vertically aligned SAT Suite of Assessments SAT SCORES RANGE: You have taken the PSAT 8/9. The PSAT 8/9 is a part of the College Board suite of exams used to determine college readiness. Since you have taken the PSAT 8/9, you will now be familiar with what the PSAT and the SAT will look like when you take it. Notice from the slide that the ranges have changed in the PSAT. They now closely align with what the score ranges are for the SAT. PSAT 10 and PSAT/NMSQT SCORES RANGE: PSAT 8/9 SCORES RANGE:

What this means to you… The PSAT/NMSQT and the SAT are on the same scale: Perfect score on the SAT: 1600 Perfect score on the PSAT: 1520 (composition is the same, the SAT is just more rigorous) The SAT and the PSAT will look and feel the same. The SAT questions will be slightly harder… The PSAT 8/9 is the younger brother of the PSAT and SAT. They all look and feel the same, but the PSAT is slightly more rigorous than the PSAT 8/9, and the SAT has a has just a little more bite than the PSAT. In all tests, the students are solving problems in science and history/social studies. They are asked to interpret meanings based on context, master relevant vocabulary, and engage in close reading. They focus in depth on three essential areas of math: problem solving and data analysis, Algebra (mastery of linear equations), and familiarity with more complex equations. Students also earn one point for each correct answer and zero points for unanswered items or wrong answers. In essence, the SAT suite of tests, look very much like what we are already covering in the classroom.

Understanding Scores 2015 Two Scores: Reading and Writing Math Added together to get your total score Indication of College Readiness You will notice that the PSAT 8/9 and the PSAT score now closely resembles the SAT score. There is the reading/writing score and the math score. Together they give you a total score. Below the score, it tells you where you rank percentage-wise nationally. Underneath the scores, the test is broken into sub-scores so that the student can see the areas where they are college-ready, approaching college readiness, or need further work in becoming college ready.

Benchmark for “college readiness”
Understanding Scores 2015 Benchmark for “college readiness” (Meaning if you score this, you would likely get a “C” in a college level class) Reading/Writing Math 10th Grade 11th Grade Interestingly enough, the scores reflect how a student would do in a college level class at this point of instruction. The scores are based on getting a “C” in a college level class. So, if you were 360 or higher in the reading/writing portion, you would most likely be able to take a college level class and pass. In Math, it would be For 11th graders, the scores are higher.

Case Study: Ima B. Student
Take a look at Ima B. Student’s Same Score Report. What are Ima’s Scores? Ima’s Evidence-Based Reading and Writing score is 460 and math is In Evidence-Based Reading and Writing. Ima’s score exceed the benchmark and she is on track for college readiness. In Math Ima is close to meeting the benchmark. Test scores, cross-test scores, and subscores can give Ima a better understanding of areas to work on. Since Ima is in the ninth grade, the percentiles compare her scores with those of all ninth graders in the nation. Ima scored as well or better than 59% of a nationally representative group of ninth-grade students in Reading and Writing. In math, she scored as well or better than 49% of a nationally representative group of freshmen. Ima’s Score Ima’s Score Percentiles

Ima and the SAT How will Ima Do on the SAT? The PSAT 8/9, PSAT/NMSQT, and the SAT are scored on a common scale. Therefore, if Ima had taken the SAT instead of the PSAT 8/9 on the same test date, she would have received the same score. By the time Ima takes the SAT, she will likely have had additional learning from school and practice. Her PSAT 8/9 results can help Ima focus her efforts in high school to be better prepared for the SAT. !

Ima’s Score Ranges No test measures precisely what someone knows, and man factors can affect results. That is why test makers think of each score as a range that extends from a few points below to a few points above the score earned.

How can Ima Improve? Your Scores: Next Steps are based on her test scores, and the general skills that similarly performing students understand. Ima can see which skills she performed well on and which she needs to improve. Ima can log in to the full report online to see additional skills and improvement steps. Ima can also link her account to Khan Academy for personalized practice recommendations.

Ima’s Next Steps… Under “GET MORE NEXT STEPS ONLINE”, Ima is directed to studentscores.collegboard.org to learn how to prepare for the SAT with Khan Academy and use her results to create a challenging coursework plan in high school.

Learning from Answers…
The score report is designed to help students see how they performed by showing the skill areas covered and whether the answer was correct, incorrect, or omitted. Students will see answer-level details on their score reports. A full answer key will be available at psat.org/89-resources. Using the ACCESS CODE, you can see the questions and the answer explanations online.
