3 The Final Solution The German plan to annihilate the Jewish people.
The genocide, or mass destruction of the Jews was the culmination of an decade of increasingly anti- Semitic and discriminatory measures. An example of this is Kristallnacht; November, Synagogues burned, Jewish owned business were targeted, looted, and vandalized. Dozens were killed. Jewish people were stripped of their human rights and sent to concentration camps throughout Europe.

20 How did this happen? In your table groups, choose 3 of the following questions and discuss: Was Hitler solely responsible for the Holocaust? Why didn't Jews leave when the Nazis came to power? Why wasn’t there more resistance from Jews? Why were Jews singled out for extermination? What other examples are there of genocide since WW2 and why does this continue to happen? Record your discussion and submit your notes at the end of the block.

21 The SS St. Louis The SS St. Louis was a passenger ship carrying 907 Jewish refugees from Germany. The ship attempted to land in Cuba, the US, and Canada and was turned back by each of these nations. "None is too many" was the response given by a high- level Canadian government official when asked how many Jews should be accepted into the country. The refugees were finally accepted in various European countries, including Belgium, the Netherlands, the UK, and France. Historians have estimated that approximately a quarter of them died in death camps during World War II.

23 Conclusion - Discussion
Were the immigration officials who denied entry to the refugees on the St. Louis bystanders, perpetrators, or resistors? What is the meaning of the poem by Niemoller?
